Sanibel and Captiva Islands both benefit from a wide variety of community organizations. Like the communities themselves, these organizations hearken back to an earlier time when communities were more in touch with one another. Many of these organizations are designed to help preserve and promote knowledge of the local environment. Among the activities in which these organizations engage are cleanups, beautification projects and activities which are simply fun. Many of these organizations are involved in the various events held throughout the year.
Many Sanibel Captiva organizations are centered around exploring the wildlife refuges found on Sanibel. A full 5,000 acres of land on Sanibel is dedicated to the preservation of the natural environment. The J.N. “Ding” Darling Days festival is attended by many of these organizations, which contribute to its continuous success. For those who are new to the island or who are just visiting on vacation, these events and organizations provide an excellent way to get out and meet the locals. There are also Sanibel clubs which center around the many sporting activities available on these islands. One must keep in mind, however, that some of these clubs are private affairs.
There are golf clubs and yacht clubs among the various Sanibel clubs and Captiva Island clubs. There are also resorts which are the home of various sporting clubs. These organizations are primarily centered on promoting the island's many tourist activities. They also provide a place for locals to gather and to enjoy one another's company and community activities. For those who arrive to the islands by boat, the various clubs centered on the marinas are natural choice. They offer several benefits to members and, if one visits yearly, it makes sense to apply to one of these clubs, even if it's just to save some money.
Sanibel and Captiva organizations that center on the environment oftentimes incorporate educational activities into their programs. Many of these activities are open to visitors and include exploring the nature reserves and shelling on the beaches. These organizations are oftentimes able to obtain the services of experts, which makes such excursions much more fun and educational. Sanibel Captiva clubs also contribute to the continuation of the island's history. For instance, the cleanup efforts in which many of these clubs engage allow the island to remain delightfully clean and pleasant and free of the clutter of the modern era.
