In 1925 at the International Convention of the Lions Club, none other than Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become "The Knights of the Blind"
The Lions Clubs
around the world have taken this charge very seriously and over the years have implemented several important programs to meet that challenge.
One of those programs is Recycle for Sight. This popular and green program matches your donated
eyeglasses (prescription and non-prescription) to needy people
worldwide.
In most developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as
one month's wages and a single eye doctor may serve a community of
hundreds of thousands of people.
Please, look around your home in dresser drawers and closets, in your workplace
and in your car. You may find some
old glasses, outdated prescription glasses, reading or sunglasses. Even
if they are in need of repair, they all can help someone to be able to
see better.
Since 1990, the Lions vision programs have prevented
severe vision loss or restored sight to 27 million people!
than the combined populations of New York and Tokyo.
You can find Lions Recycle for Sight collection boxes at the following convenient
locations:
Bailey's General Store, Jerry's Foods, Bank of the Islands,
Snead Cataract & Eye Physicians, Island Pharmacy, the Island Seniors
Center, the Sanibel Library, the Sanibel Post Office and Periwinkle
Park. There is also a collection box at South Seas Resort on Captiva.
We are grateful for the generosity of the local businesses to be
drop off centers and collection points for our
program. These businesses help to contribute to the project's success and is greatly appreciated. We urge you to patronize them.
Founded in 1917, Lions Clubs International is the world‚s largest
service club organization with nearly 1.35 million members in
approximately 45,000 clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas
around the world.
