adopt pets in Lee County, Florida

The Lee County Animal Shelter is overflowing with potential pets. The shelter has taken in more than 1,800 animals in just the last two months. Shelter officials have said that if at least 30 adoptions do not take place quickly that healthy animals will have to be euthanized to make room in the shelter.

Donna Ward, the director of the Lee County Shelter stated that only 13 percent of dogs and one percent of cats that are brought to the shelter are claimed by the rightful owners. She continued on saying that shelter employees are put in the difficult position of having to euthanize pets due to their owner's lack of responsibility.

The shelter has taken a number of steps to house the additional animals. It has added dog kennels to the conference room and turned the visitor's room into cattery for the excessive population of unwanted cats. The shelter is offering coupons to draw adopter's to the shelter that offer discounts from $20 off up to a free adoption.

Any animal adopted from the Lee County shelter comes sterilized and with current vaccinations. Every animal is given a microchip and worm medication prior to adoption. New pet owners are sent home with a bag of food and a 10-day guarantee on their new pet's health.
