When it was first built back in 1888, the Naples Pier
was a freight and passenger dock for the large ships that came through
the area. There were small train rails that ran the entire length of
the pier that were used to move both freight and baggage. A post office
was also built on the pier around this time, and both were destroyed by
a fire in 1922. Since that time, three separate hurricanes have damaged
the pier in 1910, 1926, and 1960, yet to this day the pier stands
strong, serving as a reminder of the history that has made the area
everything it is today.
While the Naples Pier was once a destination meant for travel and
shipping, today it is simply another beautiful part of the Naples
landscape. Locals have come to recognize the sight of the pier as a
symbol of history and perseverance. To this day the pier is a popular
destination for couples and families who gather together to watch the
sun as it rises and sets, to enjoy holiday fireworks, or simply to
overlook the beautiful waters that surround the pier.
While the Naples Pier once housed a Post Office as well as freight
and shipping centers, today it stands largely empty. There is a small
concession stand on offer at the mid-point of the pier, however, and
visitors will find that there are public restrooms available for use.
Today the Naples Pier is also a popular spot for fishing. There are
impressive fish caught from various spots along the pier every day,
including large redfish. Visitors will also discover that the pier is a
great place to relax and watch the pelicans at play. During the day, it
is also quite common to encounter dolphins, sharks, and other
remarkable fish simply by looking into the surrounding waters.
While it may not hold the excitement and splendor of a large theme
park, there is certainly something special about Naples Pier. Visitors
from across the world take the time to visit this landmark during their
vacations, and many write home with stories of remarkable fish and
splendid sunsets. Visiting the Florida Gulf Coast is always a special
treat, and the Naples Pier makes a great spot to simply bask and enjoy
the beauty that makes the area so famous. There are certainly larger
and more exciting spots in the area, but the pier offers a unique
glimpse of beauty, history, and peace that no other destination can
match. |
